Thursday, 10/24/24, 7 PM — 9 PM | Our October Printer-in-Residence who is embedded in ArtCenter letterpress classes this week at HMCT Archetype Press will share her work and process with the public. Jessica, a letterpress printer since 1989, invented Daredevil Furniture for the composition of metal type in circles, curves and angles. Her works include artist books, broadsides and ephemera. Saturday, 10/26, 9 AM — 4 PM | Spend a day alongside daredevil printer Jessica Spring and immerse yourself in daredevil typesetting and printing techniques. Move beyond straight lines and right angles to set type that curves, angles, and bounces. Previous letterpress printing experience is not required. Monday, December 11 | 4–6 PM | Harry Gamboa Jr. is co-founder of the Chicano Art group, ASCO (1972–1985) and currently serves as co-director of the Photo and Media Program at CalArts. His work has been exhibited by museums nationally and internationally, and he has taught, lectured, and served on panel discussions at various universities and art institutions. We are honored that Harry wrote a poem, Nothing Left, for the fall Archetype Press class at ArtCenter College of Design, which the students used as the basis for a limited edition collaborative book, that interprets his words through text and image using hand-set wood and metal foundry type and letterpress printed. Saturday, March 18 | 1 — 3 PM | In conjunction with the exhibition Hello LA: Clive Piercy–Inside the Mind of a Designer at Williamson Gallery (Hillside Campus of ArtCenter), Archetype Press presents a demonstration by Professors Simon Johnston and Gloria Kondrup, who will design and hand-set a “Hello LA” broadside in the iconic style of the Colby Poster Printing Company, which attendees will be given the opportunity to print! Simon Johnston and Clive Piercy donated their collection of Colby posters to the HMCT Archive. Designer Clive Piercy worked on a personal project with Colby, and described their work as 'inimitably LA.’ Free and open to the public. Saturday & Sunday, 10/08/2022 & 10/09/2022, 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM | Curious about letterpress printing? In this weekend workshop, you will be introduced to the technique and discover how to use type as object, character and pattern. Learn the basics of letterpress printing, press fundamentals, typographic concerns, impression, and inking control. Create a one sheet or broadside by choosing a thematic jumping-off point and creating either a character or a nonlanguage based visual story. Explore work by letterpress icons like Kurt Schwitters, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy and Bradbury Thompson for inspiration. At the end of class, you will print an edition large enough to share as a folio of prints.

Saturday 03/09 | 10:00 AM – 05:00 PM | They say you can’t judge a book by its cover. But what about by its structure? In this one-day hands-on workshop, you will explore a variety of approaches to book structures. Learn the fundamentals and gain the mechanical knowledge necessary to create simple, blank softcover books based on folding, gluing and stitching techniques.
